The Radical and Other Personages (2017) explores historical resonance in contemporary questions about American identity. The work consists of a collection of altered historical newspapers and a three-channel video performance. Save for odd fragments of invectives and moralistic statements (non-sequiturs, such as “villainy merits/Degrees in Meanness”), the digitally manipulated/erased newspapers (with titles such as “The Radical”, “The Menace”, “The Scout”, etc.) are presented without dates and text. Situated nearby are three video monitors that play a video performance scripted by the text in the newspapers.
